Southern California is based on a reputation for offering its citizens the promise of education, jobs, homes, and healthy lifestyles. People come for a better future for themselves and their families.
Unfortunately, people in the region are still struggling for safe streets, good jobs, health care, affordable housing, and a quality education for their families.
One group called the Weingart Foundation is committed to racial and socioeconomic equity and justice, especially in communities of color hit hardest by persistent poverty.
The group is working to fix the inequity that stems from the historic, long-term barriers to rights and opportunities endured by low-income communities of color in Southern California. They are investing in the communities that have been excluded and under-resourced.
The group partners with organizations working towards a fundamental change in power.
The group is also partnering with nonprofits and the people who experience injustice first-hand to help with longterm goals.
The group aims to advance equity and promises an examination of privilege, including the power dynamics between funders and nonprofits. The foundation also promises a commitment to equity and to constantly examine their own internal policies, practices, and culture with regard to equity and inclusion in order to set an example for other business leaders.
The group says the challenges are great but says there is a reason to be optimistic about the future when it comes to fixing the problems of inequality. In the area there are a growing number of civic and business leaders who recognize we need to transform systems and local leaders and activists are dedicated to the cause. They are committed and report that they are seeing real impact.
